The Soul Borrower

A Blog of Photography and my Lifeography

Work Wonders

So I work at the local Holiday Inn. I guess it’s not so local. It’s in a different town. Each day I work I have to drive 25 miles to work, oftentimes to work no more than 6 hours. Some may say that 25 miles is nothing in comparison to big city commute times.

I started this job about 3 weeks ago and I’ve got mixed emotions. They said that I would be able to work 30 to 35 hours per week, but the past 4 schedules, I’ve only had 21 tops. Although, I must say that I like working fewer hours, it doesn’t help me to pay off my personal loan with 600 some-odd dollars left. Before, I was working at least 30 hours, many times 10 hours a day for 3 days per week. I don’t really miss those days either.

Anyway, I work as a Banquet Setup guy with a bunch of deadbeat, teeny bopper, immature high school kids that seem to think that they don’t have to do anything. I would much rather do the job alone, I basically do already.

But that isn’t what this post is about. Tonight I was absolutely thrilled to find out that the “Professional Photographers of Nebraska” were dining in our hall. Basically, I spent the first hour looking at all the displays by vendors and photography submissions, and man was I impressed. Some of these photographers had more talent than I will ever have. They had such amazing photos and such amazing layouts for them. There was one vendor who was selling hand made, custom painted backdrops that looked absolutely amazing. There were many photographers displaying their photographs: many for senior (12th grade – for those not familiar with the US school system) pictures and wedding photos. I looked around at all the displays and got all depressed, thinking how crappy all my photos look in comparison.

The thing that got me the most depressed though was all their fancy dancy equipment. Some of the lenses and cameras they had their were worth more than I make in year. Most of them had multiple lenses and flashes. They really were the professionals, but just to think that I won’t, for a long time, be able to afford such equipment is depressing.

These guys were those that had this as their passion. From day one they knew that they wanted to be a photographer. Me……I’m just an Obsessed Amateur. Photography is something that I want to do, and well, but not something I want to have as a career. I’m taking a class on Photography and would love to take a couple more.

As awesome as tonight was, seeing these profis is really discouraging.

At first, I felt like blogging more about careers and what not, but right now I just feel like going to sleep. Maybe more later.

I received an email from Pathfinder, who commented on my last post, who says he wants to hear more about Germany. I definitely plan on posting more, especially since it was such a big part of my life – maybe not right away, but more is coming.

I do like every ones comments. It’s the one reason why I’ve kept blogging. On more than one occasion I’ve thought about stopping, but once a week hasn’t killed me yet, and I’m starting to enjoy it.

  1. Hi Jake,

“thinking how crappy all my photos look in comparison”… beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so don’t be discouraged or anything.

Yay!! Glad you’re carrying-on with the blog, and you’ve got some more followers too. Excellent!

Will chat again soon, I think the problem has been resolved now *fingers crossed* lol.

    Take care,
    Col
